Tulum – The one place you will never forget about

You know how there is almost that ONE favorite place on any trip you take? The place you are going to think about the most and romanticize with your friends about over a glass of wine on a dark winter evening? Jup. That place…

For me this place has been Tulum. Oh boy. I love Tulum.

I only spent two days there in total. Not even full days. If I ever go to Mexico again, I will spend a considerably larger amount of my time there.

So now you may wonder: Why in the world is Tulum so great? I’m glad you ask.

First of all, Tulum has the most stunning and beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Hands down. The colors seem almost unreal… like someone messed with them in Photoshop or some hipster painter took a little too much LSD when filling the canvas.

They are just awesome.

Apart from that, Tulum is home to the only known Mayan settlement at the beach. This ancient site is mind-blowing… and its pictures are usually printed on the front cover of all Lonely Planet Mexico editions. No wonder.

But it gets better…

Tulum has a great downtown area right at the beaches.

There are little hostels, bars, clubs, food places and super-expensive holiday rentals right next to each other – surrounded by palm trees. Walking around the downtown area feels a little like being inside a jungle, without the risk of getting lost.

Just outside of Tulum are some spectacular Cenotes. These are waterholes buried deep in the ground that are now used as tourist attractions; swimming allowed.

Definitely worth a trip.

Now to my favorite part of the whole story here:

I went to a NYE party right on the beach. Flying Circus, they called it… and offered some of the finest deep house and techno against the backdrop of the Caribbean ocean. The sun came up at 6am right behind the DJ and the party went on until 8am.

After that, I went to an after party right next to the Mayan ruins. This might have been the coolest location for an after party I have ever seen. I bet the Mayan’s threw a bunch of parties themselves… and snacked on some magic mushrooms while doing pottery.

I would not be surprised if this would be the way they spent their time.

One last thing here before I stop:

If you happen to love seafood, you might be able to get some pretty good deals there. A friend of mine told me that he stayed in Tulum in off-season and that the chefs offered him some unbelievably fresh, catch of the day, lobsters… at bargain prizes.

I want to go to Tulum again. I am still dreaming about the downtown area and the party at the beach. I may go there just for NYE.

Not a bad start into the next 365 days…
