Foster is a small country town just a stone’s throw from Wilsons Promontory. The community is close-knit and thriving, but incredibly welcoming to all newcomers and visitors alike. Farmers Markets occur outside the town hall every few weeks, providing fresh produce and a chance to connect with locals. The Foster Market, held several times a year, attracts visitors from across Victoria with its range of handmade goods, local products, and unique food and wine.
The town has community gardens and flower beds that locals maintain, keeping them clean and vibrant year-round. A variety of small shops and cafés can be browsed, and Pearl Park, which has the local creek running through it, is a beautiful spot to stop for a picnic lunch or a wander through the gardens.
Take a short drive to the neighboring picturesque towns of Fish Creek and Meeniyan to enjoy local fare, boutique wineries and galleries, or head in the other direction to Agnes Falls, where you can enjoy a stroll to see Victoria’s largest single-span waterfall.
The highlight of this peaceful coastal area is Wilsons Promontory, a stunning coastline and protected bushland rich in native Australian wildlife and beautiful natural scenery. Camping or cabin stays are available at Tidal River, as well as a small general store and café. You can quickly walk to the beach from the Tidal River, hike to nearby beaches and viewpoints, or drive and park nearby for a short stroll. Tidal River has a surf beach, while Squeaky Beach is known for its squeaky, pristine sand. Fairy Cove is great for snorkeling, and the summit of Mount Oberon offers stunning sunset views.
For the more adventurous traveler, Wilsons Promontory also offers many overnight hikes of varying difficulty and distance. The campsites have running water and well-maintained drop toilets, and park rangers regularly check the clean tent sites. Some beautiful spots, like Refuge Cove and Sealers Cove, can only be reached by hiking. If you’re up for the challenge, put on your boots and explore Wilsons Promontory.
